The subtractive rule.
The subtractive element must be within 2 digits of the major element. Therefore MDM equals M (1,000) + DM (-500+1,000) = 1,500 MCM equals M (1,000) + CM (-100+1,000) = 1,900 However MLM is NOT valid as the L is three digits below M. 1,990 would be MCMXC M(1,000) +CM(-100+1,000) +XC(-10+100) and 1999 would not be MIM but MCMXCIX as in the table above. |
